Divorced and discredited American anthropologist Dempsey (Ted Danson) arrives in Scotland to debunk the legend of the Loch Ness Lake monster. The scientific mission soon turns into much more. The charm of the small town and Dempsey's dealings with various locals -- innkeeper Laura (Joely Richardson), her young daughter Isabel (Kirsty Graham), the local water bailiff (Ian Holm) and research assistant Adrian Foote (James Frain) -- all help steer him in a positive new direction.
