In the middle of nowhere in Montana, the pastor is suddenly shot during a sermon. However, the clergyman, who is actually none other than the crook John Thunderbolt Doherty (Clint Eastwood), who has gone into hiding, manages to escape. He is able to save himself in the car of the drifter Lightfoot (Jeff Bridges), which happens to be passing by. As two of the same ilk, the two quickly become partners, but the aging thief still has his attackers and former accomplices breathing down his neck. They demand their share of the loot from a joint robbery that he is said to have cheated them out of. But the half a million he hid in an old school after the coup has disappeared. In order to get back the money, the gangsters reluctantly join forces with Lightfoot and Thunderbolt and plan a new robbery: Together they want to crack an armored safe that is considered absolutely burglar-proof.
